What is Obsessive Compulsive Disorder?

OCD is a neurobiological disorder defined by recurrent unwelcome thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behavior (compulsions) that OCD sufferers feel driven to perform.  People with OCD know that their obsessions or compulsions are excessive or irrational, yet they have little or no control over them.

Compulsions:  Repeated behaviors (hand washing, checking, putting things in order) or mental acts (repetitive or excessive praying, counting, repeating words silently) that the individual feels absolutely compelled to do in order to alleviate his/her anxiety.

Obsessions:  Recurring and persistent thoughts, impulses or images that are intrusive and unwanted, which cause extreme anxiousness and distress and seem impossible to ignore, suppress or dismiss.
